Charles H. Cox Jr., a lifelong resident of Ardmore, was called home from his labor to reward on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at his son’s residence in Houston, Texas. Born on November 1, 1925, to Mamie White and Charley H. Cox Sr., Charles grew up in Ardmore, where he attended Dunbar Elementary School and graduated from Douglass High School in the class of 1945. He furthered his education at Tennessee State University, earning a B.S. degree in Business Administration, and later obtained a teacher certification from Langston University. His teaching career began at Central High School in Graham, Oklahoma, where he inspired students for two years before transitioning to Texhoma Office Supply. It was there he formed a cherished friendship with owner Everett Capshaw that lasted over 50 years.
Charles later joined the workforce at Ardmore Air Force Base, while continuing part-time at Texhoma until its closing. He subsequently transferred to Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, dedicating 32 years of service until his retirement in 1991. A devoted member of First Baptist Church, Charles served in numerous capacities, including the pew renovation committee, maintaining the church bulletin board, ushering, and was called to be a Deacon in 1992. His daily visits to the church to ensure its well-being and cleanliness were a testament to his commitment.
In addition to his unwavering dedication to family and church, Charles was passionate about the After 6 Club, the Ardmore Douglass Alumni Association, and held a profound love for photography, where his legendary commitment shone brightly.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 71 years, Bettye, affectionately known as "B.C." He is survived by his son, Frank Louis (Vyckye); five grandchildren, Rev. Frank L. Cox II, Dr. Bettye LaTrelle Cox, Fran-Victoria Cox-Stephens, Adam L. Cox, and Aaron L. Cox; and three great-granddaughters, Journey, Haven, and Blyss Stephens. He is also remembered by special cousin Thomas Carl Varner (Dorothy) and cousins Simone Fuller and Steven Montgomery.
As we celebrate Charles's remarkable life, we cherish his legacy and reflect on the wonderful memories he has left us from his 99 years on this earth. A homecoming celebration will be held in honor of Charles on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to First Baptist Church, designating through 1888.
